Green Manuring Paddy with Sesbania aculeata (Dhaincha) at Various Levels of Fertilizers Nitrogen.

Keywords: Rice, dhaincha, fertilizer, yield

Growing green manure as a catch crop can be beneficial to the farmers. An experiment was conducted during 1976 through 1978 at Tarahara Agriculture Station, Sunsari to find out the optimum level of fertilizer nitrogen for paddy when applied in green manured field. A three-year experiment showed that green manuring alone, or in combination with fertilizer nitrogen, significantly increased the paddy yield and was economically profitable. The grain yield from green manuring alone, or in combination with fertilizer nitrogen, was equal to that obtained from 50 kg nitrogen from urea. Thus, green manuring with Sesbania aculeata could supply about 50 kg available nitrogen/ha to the subsequent paddy crop. The residual accumulation of organic matter and total nitrogen due to green manuring after the paddy crop was negligible.
