Equation for predicting soil organic carbon using loss on ignition for Chitwan soils.

Keywords: soil organic carbon, loss on ignition, method comparison, soil texture

Soil organic carbon influences soil physical and chemical processes, and serves as repository source of plant nutrients. Limited information is available concerning SOC status in the Nepalese soils. Two hundred soil samples from five different soil depths of Rampur and Baireni, were analyzed to evaluate the precision of loss on ignition method of SOC analysis. The SOC values obtained were compared with SOC values from dry combustion method of SOC analysis for the same soil samples. The correlation and regression showed precise result of SOC from both locations of the experiment. The coefficient of regression for Rampur and Baireni soils were 0.80 and 0.73 respectively. The regression lines were close to 1: 1 line.
