Monitoring of banana stem weevil, Odoiporus longicollis (Oliv.) (Coleoptera : Curculionidae) in Nawalparasi district of Nepal.

Keywords: Odoiporus longicollis, monitoring, crop stage, managed vs unmanaged orchard

The monitoring activities were conducted at Shivamandir VDC-3, Kawaswoti, Nawalparasi in the variety Jhapali Malbhog, which is similar to Cavendish group of banana. The study was conducted to know the general trend of pest in various conditions of plants i.e. various stages, seasons and conditions of orchard. Fifteen plants each of 3, 6 and 9 month old banana plants were splited into pieces and total number of grubs and adults were counted. It was found that more number of grubs and adults were observed in nine month old orchards. Similarly, to know the trend of pest in managed and unmanaged orchard, sixteen plants of each condition were splited and total number of grubs and adults were counted. It was found that maximum severity of weevil was observed in unmanaged orchard than the managed orchard. To know the pest status in different seasons, banana pseudostems of variety Jhapali Malbhog were collected and splited into pieces from Dec 1, 2005 to Apr 30, 2006 at 10 days interval and number of grubs and adults were recorded from six plant samples to see the trend of pest in different season. The fluctuating trend of pest was observed with variation in environment. The information is useful to manage the pest in time following appropriate method.
